Rum is an distilled beverage made from fermented sugar or molasses and water. After distillation, the liquid is clear. The color can change if caramel is added or if the rum is barrel aged.
There are four main varieties of rum: white, golden or amber, dark and spiced rums. White rums have little flavor other than sweetness and are usually used as bases in cocktails. They are also referred to as silver or light rums.
Golden rums are medium-bodied and gain their color from aging in wooden barrels. They are more flavorful than white rums and are considered to be the middleground between light and dark rums.
Dark rum is sometimes known as black rum and is aged for longer periods of time in heavily charred barrels.
Spiced rums are flavored by fruit flavors or spices. They are often used in rum punches.
Flavored rum are also available and are infused with tropical flavors like mango, coconut or lime.
The Caribbean Islands are notorious for their rum production. Each island produces a unique rum with its own flavor and style.
Rum can be drunk neat (without ice or other liquids), on the rocks or in a variety of cocktails and mixed drinks like the rum and coke, the daiquiri and the pina colada.
