An open letter to Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray

Dear employee,

I've been concerned about your position on guns for some time.

The Second Amendment Foundation described you as an "Anti-gun Democrat" some years back.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer called you "a mainstream Democrat who supported...gun control..."

The League of Women Voters told us you backed Predator Empowermen...I mean, "Gun Free School Zones".

And apparently, The Columbus Dispatch had this to say about you:

Richard Cordray, a Democratic state representative from Grove City, met in Washington with supporters of the Brady Bill, which calls for a five-day waiting period before buying a handgun.

Cordray said he favors the national gun control measure and will urge other central Ohioans to call or write U.S. senators and representatives urging them to pass it this year.

The bill passed the U.S. House earlier but was woven into an omnibus crime bill that has been bogged down in partisan wrangling, Cordray said. He said it appears the Brady Bill will be pulled out for possible action separately within two weeks, which is why supporters are appealing for pressure on legislators.

"I'm the only candidate in the race who supports the bill."

That's a pretty lousy record from a gun rights perspective.

Still, I note you've appeared to be mending some fences in recent years.

For instance, the Legislative Chair for Buckeye Firearms Association told us in 2006 that you're "another Ohio Democrat who 'gets it',” and tells us further:

"Rich has received the endorsement of the NRA in past runs for office where endorsements were issued."

Then you made an appearance at Ohioans for Concealed Carry's Party in the Park last year.

And I note NRA's Political Victory Fund gave you an "A" rating in your 2008 campaign that put you where you are now.

But funny thing, now that you're in power. From NRA I learn:

23 State Attorneys General To Attorney General Holder: "No Semi-Auto Ban"

On June 11, the top law enforcement officials of nearly half the states signed a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, expressing their opposition to reinstatement of the federal ban on semi-automatic firearms.

Your signature is not among theirs.

Why the hell not?

Sincerely,

I'll be visiting the Badlands tonight

Badlands Radio, that is, with host Jack Harris. The program airs via WPRT Radio and KVMP 99.9 fm Radio in central Texas, and is also rebroadcast live in Seattle, Miami, and numerous other markets through their stream.

I'm scheduled for 8:30-9:30 pm CST. I understand the discussion will be fairly freewheeling.

Click here to access Badlands Radio. I see I need to download a "Plug In," probably because I use Firefox instead of IE, so if you want to listen, you probably want to check that out beforehand.
