I just finished reading another hand-wringing attack on the right to keep and bear arms over at Black Star News. It prompted me to leave a comment, which I'd like to share with you here, especially since there's no guarantee they will post it:
You really don't understand, do you? You really don't know that the states that wanted blacks to be counted as "1" instead of "3/5" were the SLAVEHOLDING STATES. That's because, with apportionment, it would give them more representation in Congress--more power--all the while holding this NONVOTING population hostage. Those opposed to slavery didn't want them counted at all for that reason.
But then, you don't understand "gun control" had its roots in racism, either, do you? I notice you never talk about the slave codes that could punish a black man for having a dog because it might attack a white man--or the post-Civil War black codes designed to put firearms beyond the economic means of freed blacks--or a key observation in Dredd Scott, that a black man simply CAN'T be a "citizen" because then he'd have the same rights as whites, including the right to keep and bear arms. Yeah, Chief Justice Taney actually wrote that. You'd know if you took the time to do a little learning before presuming yourself authoritative enough to teach.
Why not ask Roy Innis of CORE where the term "Saturday Night Special" came from? I guarantee your readers won't like it.
And now here you come telling good people the only way they can be safe is to be disarmed in the very neighborhoods where predators run rampant? Hey, everybody who thinks the police can protect you, feel free to chime right in. You can continue to listen to frustrated windbags like Milton here--just know he can't protect you either.
"The mayhem guns are causing"--what a crock. And you want to call people like me names like "gun nuts" (hey how would you feel if I called civil rights advocates "race nuts"?) and disparage the NRA? OK, here's a little test--look at their 4 million members, the most heavily armed civilian population on the planet. How much "mayhem" have their tens of millions of guns caused? Show me one NRA member who has done a drive by or a home invasion, an armed robbery...
You want to stop the madness, man up to the fact that it's individual responsibility and choice that make the true difference. Go ahead and use racism as a crutch, that you're being held down by the Man if you want, but people are waking up to the fact that excuse-making doesn't produce freedom.
And one of these days, they're going to tire of your cowardly finger-pointing and irritating yapping, and discover there are true voices of wisdom and courage in the community--men like Rev. Kenn Blanchard, "The Black Man with a Gun."
I listen to him and I listen to you, and I've gotta say, there's no comparison. Hopefully, more of your readers will discover him and discover that for themselves, and that your "speaking truth to empower" motto is little more than Orwellian sloganeering, as it's not true, and helplessness is the opposite of empowerment.
