We'd just talked about Dede Scozzafava suspending her campaign for Tuesday's New York 23rd Congressional District special election. Per her earlier campaign statement:
I hereby release those individuals who have endorsed and supported my campaign to transfer their support as they see fit to do so.
Apparently, that's not good enough. From Fox News:
Republican Dede Scozzafava endorsed her former Democratic opponent Sunday in the race for an upstate New York congressional seat, shaking up the contest for the second day in a row after exiting the race Saturday.
Huh. I wonder what Newt's gonna say about her "principled leadership" now? And what this says about putting faith in "moderate" Republicans, especially those who would burn the Big Tent down when they don't get center ring?
This once again highlights a concern I've raised about NRA endorsements. You'll recall their chief lobbyist, Chris Cox, had this to say to Scozzafava:
Based on your tested and proven record in the New York Assembly, as well as your responses to our federal candidate questionnaire, you have earned an "A" rating from the NRAPVF.
By endorsing a candidate who has shown no regard for the Second Amendment over a candidate who proclaims NRA membership to actively court "gun voters," Scozzafava has turned her back on the gun owner constituents who have supported her in the past, and who were continuing to support her in this campaign.
The question that comes to my mind, as it has with "A" rated candidates who supported Barack Obama, and Eric Holder, and Sonia Sotomayor, et al., is, will we see a price to pay in terms of a downgraded NRA rating the next time they run for office?
If not, why not?
