I've written about the Appleseed Project before, a few years back for my Guns Magazine "Rights Watch" commentary, and with reminders and updates about upcoming events here in my Gun Rights Examiner column.
For those of you who may not be familiar with the program, they provide rifle marksmanship "boot camps" across the country.
"We seek to do three things," they say, "teach marksmanship and respect for the tradition of such, and to preserve the knowledge of our Revolutionary War history ... We believe that if we teach it, it'll wake our fellow Americans ... and an awakened America is an America that cannot be defeated."
I've just now learned of an event they held at the end of August that could go a long way toward dispelling the notion that cops are the "only ones" who can be trusted with guns, and that could increase both community safety and trust: The Shelby County, AL Sheriff's Department hosted an Appleseed event at their training center.
From Instructor "Bama" on the RWVA forum:
First I want to thank the Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry and his amazing staff of Deputies. As far as I am aware, this was the first Appleseed hosted by a Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff and his Deputies need to be commended for their commitment to our American Heritage of Liberty. The Sheriff's Office did not have to open their doors to Appleseed, but they did. Not only did they open the door, they helped carry the torch.
Check out the comments and the pictures.
This is a great start, and, if you think about it, the way things ought to be. Compare this to the mindset of some that the proper interaction between police and armed citizens should be through snitch programs and gun "buybacks."

UPDATE: Correspondent "Rifle Woman" advises via email:
"Boot camps are week long and there are only a very few of those a year. Appleseeds are just the weekend and there are 5-20 of those across the country on any weekend. They might find that easier to swallow until they understand what one really is."
