Is the way SPLC selects who to scream about racist?

With the media interest shown toward Oath Keepers this past week, from Chris Matthews to Lou Dobbs, I'd be remiss if I didn't credit the one group that helped gin up enough buzz to pique their interest: the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It would be fair to ask why a group that supposedly exists to fight violence and racism would target a group that specifically disavows those very things:

We are Not advocating or promoting violence towards any organization, group or person. We are determined to Keep our Oath to support and defend the Constitution.

We are Not advocating or promoting any act or acts of aggression against any organization or person for any reason including, but not limited to; race, religion, national origin, political affiliation, gender or sexual orientation.

Yet in their recent "exposé," "The Second Wave, Return of the Militias," presented under the guise of "track[ing] activities of hate groups," SPLC has done their best to smear Oath Keepers as being the opposite of what they stand for, dragging in events like the Oklahoma City bombing or "the fact that the president is an African American" in order to tar them with that brush--spokesflack Mark Potok's disingenuous "That's ridiculous!" denial on "Hardball" notwithstanding.

I opened an email last night from a frequent correspondent--one who regularly sends me news tips for my "War on Guns" blog, and he reminded me of an event that happened a few years back that demonstrates real hate, real racism, and a real call to violence of the worst kind: genocide.

Meet Dr. Kamau Kambon, "who taught Africana Studies 241 in the Spring 2005 semester at North Carolina State University."

But don't let me influence you. Let him speak for himself. Here's his appearance on C-Span:

Y'know, that seems a pretty good reason for owning guns right there...

And just think: This loopy character has been presented as a respected authority to students at institutions of higher learning. Before NCSU, he "was a professor of education at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, a historically black institution. He was given a Citizen's Award in 1999 by the Triangle’s left-wing newspaper, The Independent Weekly." He's influential enough to be a guest speaker at Howard University, and to be presented on C-Span. And he is still a force of influence in molding minds through his BlackNificent Books and More enterprise, where we learn ""The Truth is considered Hate only to those who Hate the Truth."

Ri-ight. And how about the way some mob-minded morons actually clapped for him?

While it is true the SPLC has criticized "black supremacists" in the past, a search for Kamau Kambon on their website yielded this:

Likewise, this is what a search on the SPLC blog produced:

Ah, but then, they tell us right there in their banner who they're concerned about, don't they?

Keeping an Eye on the Radical Right.

Those who pledge to fulfill their oath to support and defend the Constitution are extremist threats to the Republic, you see.

Genocidal racist loons? Well, that depends...

A counter to the SPLC view of Oath Keepers

Read "Ready to protect," where:

Celia S. Hyde a retired Bolton police chief said Oath Keepers is “all about protecting the rights of the people.” She is Massachusetts director of the new group and is a member of its national board.
