Twin Falls recently formed a bicycle sub-committee to tackle bicycle safety. They plan on coming up with some recommendations for a “bicycle code”. Bicycle safety committee member Kevin Dane was quoted as saying “to get a bike code or bike safety code to protect people vice versa from motorists and cars and so forth."
Mr. Dane, how many times do bicycles endanger motorists? Here's a few recommendations for your committee to help make bicycling in Twin Falls safer from someone that rides a bicycle daily in Twin Falls.
1.More Police
If the city would allow for more police officers to be hired they could help arrest more drunk drivers. The can also cite and or arrest drivers who cut off and force bikers off of the road. This is why I ride my bicycle on the sidewalk when possible.
A larger police force would also allow the officers to set up DUI check points and be able to stop and arrest more intoxicated drivers. A larger police force would benefit everybody except for the criminals.
2.The large numbers of refugees riding their bicycles in Twin Falls has brought on an onslaught of racism. Many drivers only see refugees riding their bikes and now a few drivers assume that all people riding bicycles must be refugees. You need to educate these people that a refugee riding a bicycle to the grocery store is not a threat to liberty. Turn off Glenn Beck and realize that these refugees on bicycles are not militant terrorists aiming to destroy America.
3.Educate drivers that if they force a bicyclist who is riding legally on the edge of a road and you as a driver cut him off, force the biker off the road, or yell and taunt the bicyclist then you will be cited.
I know the bicycle committee is trying to be helpful but I fear the biggest problems facing cyclists in Twin Falls can not be fixed by a bicycle safety committee. It will only lead to more regulations for bikers and will do nothing to fix the problem drivers.
