England based Riversimple unveiled the prototype of a new hydrogen powered car. Riversimple says that the vehicle has a top speed of about 50 mph and gets the equivalent of 300 miles per gallon.
The 770 lb. car has a 6kW fuel cell and emits almost no CO2. The small fuel cell is possible because of the car's small weight. Small enough that many weightlifters could do power squats with it. The fuel cell is made by Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies, based in China, which contributed to the R&D on the new vehicle.
Hydrogen power gives you more energy and power per unit of weight, hydrogen fuel cells have less storage capacity than batteries.
The release puts us one step closer to making hydrogen cell technology a reality. Availability and cost still remain big barriers to fuel cell tech, not to mention oil companies and others who have a vested interest in keeping such alternative energy technologies under the radar.
Riversimple's car isn't for sale just yet, they are scheduled to go into production in 2013. At that point you'll have to lease it for about $300 a month and that price includes maintenance and fuel.
Battery technology has been seen as the future, because hydrogen is still expensive but that will hopefully change. The process for creating hydrogen fuel just isn't there yet to be commercially feasible. However, whether we plug our cars into the grid or fill them up at a hydrogen station, fossil fuels are still used to create the energy.
