The "summer" season has been in full swing at Yosemite for several weeks now, despite weather that isn't cooperating with outdoor fun for many visitors.
Tragically, the park has had two deaths in just the past couple days, a hiker from San Ramon who fell nearly 200 feet on Half Dome, and Yosemite concession work trainee who fell from a cliff in the eastern part of the park.
The hiker made his climb on Saturday, when the weather turned, and rain, fog and even hail pelted visitors on the mountain, the LA Times said.
The body of the trainee, who was supposed to start work in the park later this summer, was found Monday afternoon, the Associated Press said.
My gal and I tried recently to hike up to Nevada Falls from the village, but thunderstorms made the stairway ascent pretty unpleasant -- cold, wet and soggy for our shoes.
We turned back at some scenic, misty spot on the well-named Mist Trail and later drowned our sorrows with Sierra Nevada ale. Well, I did.
Next time I will check the weather forecast, although there's really no telling when Thor will swing his mighty hammer in the skies and rain terror -- and rain -- down on us mortals, who say we celebrate the "beauty of nature" though we're really praying to savage and indifferent Mother Earth to spare us from her wrath.
I'm paraphrasing Camille Paglia in that last bit, by the way. There is nothing new under the sun.
