The Fourth of July weekend was unkind to the Iowa Hawkeyes football team, which might have suddenly lost two impact players.
A torrent of message board rumors swirled this weekend concerning an alleged injury to sophomore running back Jewel Hampton, who was expected to replace All-American Shonn Greene as Iowa’s featured back this upcoming season. Last year, Hampton rushed for 463 yards and seven touchdowns during an impressive freshman campaign.
Hawkeyereport.com writer Tom Kakert confirmed on local sports radio station 1700 The Champ today that Hampton did indeed injure his knee during non-contact drills on Friday, though the severity of the injury has not yet been reported. Cedar Rapids Gazette reporter Marc Morehouse writes on his blog that Hampton’s MRI is scheduled for today, but there is not yet any word of when those results will be made public.
Should the worst case scenario prove true for Hampton - a torn ACL and lost for the entire season - then Iowa will turn to redshirt freshman Jeff Brinson, a powerful runner who amassed more than 5,000 rushing yards as a prep in Florida.
Hampton’s injury comes at the same time reports are surfacing about the departure of second-string middle linebacker Jacody Coleman, who is reportedly intent on transferring to a program closer to his native town of Beaumont, Texas.
Rumors circulated around spring practice that Coleman was considering transferring, however, those were eventually quashed and it seemed like he was content with backing up starter Pat Angerer again this season. His departure damages Iowa’s defensive depth charts, as there is now no heir apparent to replace Angerer once he graduates at the end of this season.
