Whip out the sparklers (and maybe the fire extinguisher) because the 4th of July is only three days away. Long traffic lines and crowded parks can be a lot more bearable with a little preparation so here’s a list of some must see fireworks displays in the Kansas City area.
KC Riverfest: Celebrating all day both Friday and Saturday, the KC Riverfest fireworks begin at 10:05 pm on the 3rd and 4th. The fireworks display is supplemented by live entertainment on both the Friends of the River Main Stage and the Radio Disney Stage for the younger crowd.
Independence: Fireworks begin at the Mormon Visitors Center at 937 West Walnut at 9:30 pm. Gates open at 8 pm. Enjoy the Spirit of Independence Band while waiting for the display to start. Bring blankets and lawn chairs because parking is limited.
Parkville: Parkville, Missouri hosts a four-day celebration with a nightly carnival starting on July 1. The fourth of July parade starts at 63rd Street and Highway 9 at 10 am. Fireworks over the Missouri River are at 9:45 pm.
Overland Park: The Corporate Woods Star Spangled Spectacular starts at 4:00 pm with food, rides, and performances from bands like The Atlantic Express. Fireworks are at 9:30 pm.
Worlds of Fun: Friday night is The Buzz Party at the Park. Get special twilight tickets from 96.5 The Buzz. There will be performances from local bands, $1 hot dogs and Pepsi products, and fireworks at 10 pm. There will also be a fireworks display on Saturday night at 10 pm.
Kansas City Royals: Just east of downtown Kansas City at Kauffman Stadium: Royals vs. White Sox on July 3. Fireworks will begin after the game.
Olathe: The Great Mall of the Great Plains fireworks display begins at approximately 9:45 pm. Check for extra savings throughout the day at local shops.
Smithville: Fireworks start around 9:00pm on July 4 from the Smithville Marina dam.
DeSoto: Festivities in DeSoto, Kansas begin at 6:00 pm with fireworks scheduled to go off at 9:45 pm. Located at Riverfest Park.
Leawood: The Leawood Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a day of family fun at the Leawood City Park. Kid activities, food, and entertainment will be available from 5:00 pm with fireworks starting at 9:45 pm.
Sugar Creek: The longest running parade in the state of Missouri starts at 11:00 am from Sterling Avenue and Lexington Avenue. Musical entertainment in the form of the Heritage Philharmonic kicks off at 8:00 pm. Fireworks begin at roughly 9:30 pm.
The city of Blue Springs, Missouri and Shawnee Mission Park in Kansas have cancelled their Independence Day activities for 2009.
