This year is the 15th annual Icons + Altars benefit exhibition at The New Art Center in Newton (NAC). This is a thoroughly unique event full of excitement, suspense, fun, and powerful art. Artists throughout New England create and contribute an icon or altar to this exhibition that may be personal, cultural, social, or spiritual in content and theme. This year there are 108 artists contributing art to the vibrant display working in a wide variety of styles, methods, and media. The New Art Center in Newton is a non-profit art organization established in 1977 and has been dedicated to artistic creation and education through classes, exhibitions and public programs for children and adults for thirty-one years. Proceeds from the special auction connected with this show, and the ticket sales purchased (in exchange for original works of art) benefit the New Art Center’s art education and exhibition programs.
The opening and closing receptions for this exhibition, and daily viewing during the open gallery hours (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm, Sat-Sun 1-5pm, closed Nov 27-29) are free to the public. The donations are made to the NAC through ticket sales. Buy a ticket for $250 and you will receive a work of art of your choice from the exhibition. There are only as many tickets sold as there are artworks available, so purchase your tickets now before they are all gone. Purchase your ticket on or before November 14 and be entered into a raffle on opening night for an additional Icons + Altars ticket. Tickets are available for sale through the New Art Center until the lottery drawing begins on the last day of the show, Sunday, December 14, at 4pm. Each ticket holder is permitted to select their piece of artwork from the exhibition in the order in which their name is drawn in the lottery. Ticket holders need not be present at the drawing to select their artwork, as a preference list of artworks may be submitted ahead of time. A photo of every artwork in the exhibition will be on the NAC web site by the show opening date, this Friday, November 14 so you can get a preview of the included works and know what your art selection preferences are before you even arrive at the gallery.
In addition to the one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that you will receive for the price of your ticket, you will also be permitted to bid in a special Anniversary Auction on the works of long-time NAC supporters, Stephanie Chubbuck, Bonnie Mineo, and Jessica Straus. Only ticket holders may bid on works in this special auction event.
