Adult cats are affected by the Diamond Pet Food cat food recall

Diamond Pet Foods has issued a voluntary recall of its Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Food and Premium Edge Hairball Cat Food which was distributed in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and 12 other states, because these formulas are known to be deficient in thiamine (Vitamin B1).

According to the company, at least 21 cats who were fed these Diamond products in New York and Pennsylvania were found to be thiamine-deficient.  The last report of a problem was received on October 19th, 2009.

Thiamine is an essential nutrient in the feline diet.  Diamond's press release on the recall explains that "symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature.  At the first stage, the cat may show decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss." 

Signs of prolonged thiamine deficiency may include "ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobby walking, circling, falling, and seizures."  If left untreated, thiamine-deficient cats can die.

Cat owners who have fed Diamond Premium Edge Finicky Adult Cat Food or Diamond Premium Edge Hairball Cat Food should contact their veterinarian if their cats display any unusual behavior or lack of coordination.  The products can be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
