New government research shows an alarming number of women admit to drinking while pregnant.

The Centers for Disease Control questioned more than 500,000 women.  They found that one in eight women reported drinking some amount of alcohol while pregnant.  One in 50 pregnant women reported binge drinking.

What’s more, the problem is not limited to teens or young mothers.

Women 35-44 years of age were most likely to consume alcohol while pregnant (17.7%).

Other groups with high rates of drinking during pregnancy include college graduates (14.4%), employed women (13.7 %), and unmarried women (13.4%).

Doctors strictly forbid drinking any amount of alcohol while pregnant.

“Exposure to alcohol can cause lifelong physical and mental disabilities that are preventable by avoiding alcoholic drinks while pregnant,” said Edwin Trevathan, director of the CDC’s National Center of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities.

He says, “All women should know that there is no known safe amount of alcohol to drink or safe time to drink it during pregnancy. We encourage all women to pay attention to the surgeon general warnings.”

Unfortunately, there’s been no decrease in the number of women who drink while pregnant in the past 15 years.
