Wisconsin Attorney General, JB Van Hollen, released a statement yesterday explaining his decision not to represent Govornor Jim Doyle in the battle for domestic partnerships. Now... I could be wrong, but I feel like I've heard this somewhere before. Van Hollen says that domestic partnerships violate the state's ban on gay marriage by creating a legal status that is "substantially similar" to traditional marriage. He noted that the criteria for forming both relationships are nearly identical.
Sound familiar? It almost sounds like he was reading his statement directly from the Wisconsin Family Council's petition to overturn domestic partnerships:
“The form of domestic partnership created by the domestic partnership registry is prohibited by Art. XIII, sec. 13 of the Wisconsin Constitution by creating and requiring recognition of a legal status substantially similar to that of marriage....Such domestic partnerships are entered into by same-sex partners and are officially created and acknowledged in essentially the identical way that marriages are entered into by a man and woman and are officially created and acknowledged."
Just to be clear... the role of the Attorney General is to enforce the law as it was passed by the legislature. Basically, defending this law is his job. Clearly, he's been brainwashed.
