Today marks the end of a long, brutal campaign which has probably left everyone in Georgia exhausted.
With the Senate holding at 58 seats, all focus has been lasered on Minnesota's recount and Georgia's runoff election. AS there's not much campaigning that can be done for a recount, Georgia has been the recipient (or victim) of four more weeks of campaigning from Jim Martin and Saxby Chambliss.
The amount of advertising, almost entirely negative, is enough to make most average voters weary and annoyed at every commercial break or radio spot. During this runoff phase, there have been negative advertisements running constantly - two, three, sometimes four ads for Martin or Chambliss during one three-minute commercial break.
It's enough to make you want to hide out in a gulch until it ends.
On a brighter note, Georgia has seen a good share of national figures come to Georgia to lend support to their party's candidate. Chambliss has received help on the stump from Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, and John McCain, while Martin has had help from both Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Strangely absent from the Georgia front has been President-Elect Obama. One would think he could be a useful asset in firing up people to come out to the polls for the runoff. However, while he has sent staff and volunteers, he has not personally come to the state to stump. With most polls showing Chambliss in the lead, perhaps it would have been a good gamble to take to pick up that potential 60th Senate seat.
As for this observer, I'm just glad the constant negative advertising will be done in a matter of hours. While it does not appear that there will be a Democratic victory to get to the magic number of 60, these past few weeks have given many conservatives a bad case of indigestion as we move into a new year.
