Mysterious, sexy, inspiring, innovative are just a few words to describe the writing style of Ber-Henda Williams. Her name is of Greek and German origin meaning “bear hearted protector”. Ber-Henda is the founder of the successful monthly Poetry Pages and Scribes series at the Southfield Public Library. Her first book “Memoirs of the Human Experience and Everything in Between, Volume I” is a collection of her personal works. The poetess provides her insights as she peruses topics such as relationships, hope, love, spiritual reflections and her personal journey into creative writing. She writes about situations that many individuals can relate to.
Her love and fluency of the Spanish language is well presented as she uses both in the book. Ber-Henda tells of how the rhythm of the language caused her to fall in love with speaking Spanish when she was just fourteen years old. In a poem called Sanctuary she describes her first trip to a Spanish speaking country. She visited a Rainforest at Pico Falls in Mexico and was enraptured by the scenic beauty and gratified by the warm welcome given by the friendly natives of the area. She recalls a family inviting her to their home to eat. They treated her like she was a close relative. As Ber-Henda felt satisfied from the meal and the thoughts of the luscious scenery she started to formulate how she would soon write a poem about this exquisite place. She reminisced about her experience in the rainforest, “I felt as if I had walked into God’s bedroom.” Music played a big role in Ber-Henda’s poetry writing. She was moved to start writing poetry when she first heard the song “blue is the colour of pain” by Caron Wheeler. The emotional appeal of the song gave Ber-Henda the tools to begin her writing career. Ber-Henda had influence from many styles of music including Salsa, Soul, Merengue and Bachata. The powerful passion in the rhythm and lyrics in music is important to the poet’s own creations.
The book delves into feminist issues by capturing the evolution of women’s roles in society. Ber-Henda discusses the sacred feminine aspect of God. Her writings unveil great inspiration for women to reach beyond the limits set by culture. Berhenda feels that in life when a door is closed to an opportunity it may not be for the worse. Shedding a positive light on challenging situations always gives a meaningful perspective while walking through troubled times.
Ber-Henda describes the magnificent and unpredictable state of love. She feels that love is all-inclusive and accepting. “It can permeate through your whole being to the point where a human can become God-like,” she reflected, “It is like a well-crafted Samurai Sword that is beautiful to look at although if mishandled it can be fatal.”
Ber-Henda’s book takes you on a journey through life experiences and encompasses situations of self-love, self-loathing, spirituality, sexuality and learning to value all experiences good and bad. Ber-Henda looks forward to working with musicians in the future, mentoring young writers and continuing to inspire people everywhere. Her artful delivery and stimulating sentences show she is a genuine purveyor of the spoken and written word. Ber-Henda’s book “Memoirs of the Human Experience and Everything in Between Volume 1” is now available.
