Tocumen International Airport is located about 19 kilometers (12 miles) to the east of Panama City, Panama. For this reason, it is helpful to know your options for transportation between the two locations.
Taxi: Taxi drivers will be waiting in the main lobby where you will exit the airport. Rates are about $33 one way for one person. At times, when traveling with a group of three or more, I have been charged $10 a person. The taxi will deliver you to your designation in Panama City. Especially for late arriving flights drivers will usually wait to ensure you can check into your chosen hotel and should deliver you to another hotel free of charge if you are turned away from the first. You may be asked if you would like to take the “Corredor”, a toll road with less traffic. If you agree, be prepared to pay the tolls, currently a total of $2.65 one way.
Diablo Rojo: The converted school buses, with their wild colors and streamers, travel between the Albrook Bus Terminal in Panama City and the Tocumen area. They stop along the road outside of the airport (you will board a bus heading towards the left when your back is to the airport or one where “Terminal” is being advertised as an upcoming stop by the driver or assistant). The cost is about $1.00. However, this mode of transportation is only suggested for an experienced traveler with little luggage. Buses run during daytime hours and do not accommodate early-morning or late-night flight times.
Hotel shuttles: Several hotels offer a shuttle service. Prices begin at about $15 to travel from Tocumen to the hotel and $25 for the return trip. Make a reservation for your hotel room and the shuttle ahead of your travels. Upon arrival, look for someone in the airport lobby holding a sign with your name on it. Hotels that do not offer shuttles typically have a list of taxi drivers and will arrange for transportation for you.
Resort shuttles: Some resorts will include the cost of their shuttle in your package price or offer the service for a fee. Someone with a sign featuring your name and that of the resort will meet you in the lobby of the airport.
Rental cars: Several rental car companies have booths in the airport. Reservations are recommended, but cars may be available on-site. Click here for information on the companies servicing Panama.
Tip:
If you will be traveling between the airport and Panama City often, find a taxi driver who you like and that charges a fair price. Ask for their business card and offer to contact them when you need a ride. You will receive good service and may enjoy a reduced fare if you are remembered and a faithful customer.
Note: Prices are subject to change.
