The Korean News Service recently reported on the successful cultivation of tea plants by the South Hwanghae Provincial Branch of the Academy of Agricultural Science. It had previously been thought that tea couldn’t be grown in North Korea because of the country’s physiographical conditions. The agricultural scientists, however, have managed to succeed in doing what had been thought to be impossible.

They have produced a green tea with healthy properties like other green teas grown elsewhere. The “Unjong Tea” as it has been named by General Secretary Kim Jong II, contains alkaloids, some essential amino acids, and vitamins C and E. The claim the tea clears the head as ins good for such conditions as arteriosclerosis, hypertension, etc, just like the green teas we have already come to know.
