In a story that appeared this morning, the Shreveport Times reported on a citywide sweep to clear about 75 warrants, which netted 19 arrests.
What is notable about this story is that the first person to be mentioned was a woman. Qualandra Johnson was arrested on five outstanding warrants, including one aggravated assault charge. Another woman was wanted on 25 separate warrants for various charges which included domestic battery and cruelty to animals.
A sidebar notes the arrests and the names of those arrested. It should come as no surprise that more women are on that list.
Also of note is the fact their homepage features a PSA that mentions both female and male victims.
Society at large needs to recognize that domestic violence is neither a gender issue, nor a political issue. If we expect to begin finding solutions to this problem, we cannot look at only a part of it and attempt to rationalize away the rest.
The Shreveport Times is to be congratulated for its even-handed coverage that is still remarkable and rare, even in these supposedly enlightened times.
