New information has been revealed regarding Nidal Malik Hassan and warning signs that were missed regarding the Fort Hood shooting incident. Could this tragedy have been prevented? Tomorrow, a public memorial is scheduled and thousands are expected to be in attendance, including President Obama. Meanwhile the families of the victims try to come to terms with the reality that they’ve lost their loved ones on home soil, on a United States military base, where they should have been safe.
The investigation continues and recent reports state that Nidal Malik Hasan is awake and conscious. His lawyers do not want him to speak to investigators, according to a recent report by the Associated Press. Nidal Malik Hassan was transported to San Antonio after the attack and is no longer in Fort Hood.
The question now remains whether Hasan committed the violent attack due to PTSD and undiagnosed mental health issues or whether it was a terrorist attack funded by his beliefs in extremist Muslim groups. The possibility that it was a terrorist attack has been fueled by recent allegations that Nidal Malik Hasan has ties to the same mosque that two of the 9/11 hijackers attended. Senator Joe Lieberman announced that he is going to launch hearings to determine whether or not the United States Army missed warning signs regarding Hasan’s mental state or terrorist links.
