Strong winds from today's severe weather has knocked down a tree in the North Lawn of the White House.

The European Linden tree snapped off near the base of its trunk. Grounds officials plan to chop up the tree for mulch. White House spokesman Bill Burton says the tree was planted in 1940, but it was not planted by any president for a special occasion.

Former president George W. Bush and Laura Bush planted a tree in the North Lawn to replace a 140-year-old tree that fell back in 2006.

Today's band of severe weather is to blame for other tree collapses and power outages throughout the metropolitan region.
