A Rexford, NY man is being sought after allegedly threatening to kill President Barack Obama, but his father claims he is mentally ill and not dangerous.
Daniel J. Murray’s neighbors call him the “Cape Man” because he sometimes wore a cape and talked to himself while gesturing wildly.
Murray's license plate read “ACHOSEN1” and the outside of his home was decorated with religious figures, including a glowing cross in the backyard.
Court records indicate that in mid-May, Daniel Murray opened an account at Zion’s First National Bank in Utah, by depositing $85,000.
He asked if the bank was solvent and said, “With all this mess going on under President Obama and the banks and economy, I’m sure if citizens happen to lose their money, they will rise up and we could see killing and deaths.”
On May 27, Murray told a bank teller in St. George, Utah, “We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States.”
He attempted to withdraw $12,698, but did not have the proper identification to do so. Murray told the teller, “Not to be disrespectful, but if I don’t get this money, someone is going to die.”
The bank manager approved the transaction and while the teller was counting his money, Murray rambled on saying,
We are 94 million miles from the sun, and are in between the sun and moon, and the eagle that flies between them, and it’s a giant step for mankind... I have traveled thousands of miles to be here and know things that are going to happen… The banking system will fail and people will die… There will be chaos in the world… We are on a mission to kill the president of the United States.”
His father, Michael Murray said of his son, “He’s sick. He’s been sick for about 10 years.” He also said his son had been in and out of mental institutions over the years. “I hope they find him.”
Authorities said Murray has eight registered firearms, including semi-automatic pistols.
Records indicate he sold his home in Feb. for $240,000 and it is not clear where he has been living since then. According to a court affidavit, Murray was recently in California, Georgia, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Texas.
