Between June 25 to July 10, the dates cited in the no-sail ban for military drills sent to Japan’s Coast Guard, the U.S. and other authorities are observing North Korea closely for signs the country may fire short- or mid-range missiles.
North Korea has accused the U.S. of trying to provoke another Korean War, while it prepared for military exercises it will hold off its eastern coast. The nation warned it would fire a long-range missile after the condemnation it received from U.N. Security Council due to an April rocket launch, which was seen as a cover for ballistic missile testing.
Last month, after North Korea conducted underground nuclear testing, the Security Council formulated a resolution that clamped down on the country’s trading of weapons-related materials and banned arms by requiring U.N. member states to inspect ships suspected of carrying illicit cargo.
North Korea is already suspected of breaking this resolution by transporting illegal weapons in a ship sailing off the coast of China as a U.S. destroyer followed close behind.
By Wednesday, a senior defense official said the ship, called the Kang Nam, had already cleared the Taiwan Strait.
It is unclear if the U.S. plans to intercept the ship, however, Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said, “That’s a decision that will have to be made at some point, and not necessarily just by us or this government. I think we will likely take [the decision] collectively with our allies and partners.”
North Korea has said it would consider any interception of its ships a declaration of war. “If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and the people of Korea will… wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all,” said a dispatch from the Korean Central News Agency.
A high-level meeting to discuss North Korea’s actions has been proposed by South Korea, which would include the U.S., China, Japan, and Russian.
