Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez issues warning to U.S. and ‘Mr. Obama’

On Sunday, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez ordered his military forces to be ready for an armed conflict and issued a warning to the U.S. and Columbia.

Tensions have been rising between Venezuela and Columbia due to a series of murders and shootings in border areas. Chavez said if a war were to break out, it could “…extend throughout the whole continent.”

CKTB reports that Chavez told his troops during his weekly television and radio broadcast, “The best way to avoid war is preparing for it.”

For over a decade, Chavez has accused the U.S. of attempting an overthrow of his government to obtain his oil reserves. He warned President Barack Obama to abstain from using his alliance with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe to attack Venezuela.

Referring to the U.S., Chavez said “The Empire is more threatening than ever. Don’t make a mistake, Mr. Obama, by ordering an attack against Venezuela by way of Colombia.”

According to CKTB, there was no immediate reaction from the White House regarding Chavez’s statements. However, in the past, Washington has denied having any intentions to engage in a military conflict with Venezuela, indicating its relationship with Columbia involves fighting the war on drugs and insurgents.
