Thirteen people died in the massacre that took place on the large Texas Army base. An Army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, is suspected of perpetrating the attack.
Hasan, 39, had spent much of his career counseling wounded soldiers at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, according to the Washington Post. He was transferred to Fort Hood in April and was preparing to be deployed to Afghanistan.
In his weekly radio address, the president called the Fort Hood tragedy “a crime against our nation.” He continued:
It is an act of violence that would have been heartbreaking had it occurred anyplace in America. It is a crime that would have horrified us had its victims been Americans of any background. But it's all the more heartbreaking and all the more despicable because of the place where it occurred and the patriots who were its victims."
During the milieu, Hasan was shot four times by police. He is currently hospitalized and in stable condition.
