The music thumped, drinks flowed and finger food was steadily consumed Tuesday evening as the Houston Texans players (and a few cheerleaders) mingled among faithful fans and fashionistas alike at Saks Fifth Avenue in the Houston Galleria.
There are not many venues where one can dress up and match threads with third-year tight end Owen Daniels or rookie offensive tackle Duane Brown. A number of their teammates, including fullback Vonta Leach, quarterback Sage Rosenfels, and offensive tackle Eric Winston, cut striking figures as they prepared to strut their stuff on the carpeted "catwalk" that replaced the third-floor shoe department for the night. Allen Edmonds exclusively outfitted the players with shoes for the show.
The crowd mix was quite a curiosity, from denim-clad autograph seekers with footballs in hand to ladies dressed to the nines. Ironically, dress code need not apply here. But if a man was in the market for a high-end suit, would find hundreds to choose from on the racks starting at 30 percent off. The likes of Armani, Brioni, Oxxford and Kiton going on sale before Thanksgiving? A buyer's market indeed.
The Texans are no strangers to the fashion world in Houston. Last month, defensive back Will Demps was featured in a photo spread in The Men's Book, a special issue published by Houston Modern Luxury magazine.
More players followed suit Tuesday night stylin' at Saks, looking as if they were about to travel to their next game (at Cleveland on Sunday at noon on Ch. 11) in limousines.
Well done, gentlemen.
