"Be nice" just doesn't cut it. When I try this directive on my son, his absoulte lack of a response makes me wonder if I actually even spoke the words out loud.

It makes sense. There is no automatic, immediate reward just for being nice. Sometimes, people do not even notice. And what a vague, overused phrase, anyway!

"How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids" helps teach children that we all contribute to each other's emotions. It does so without every saying, "Be nice."

The main character, Felix, learns that when others do kind things for him, an imaginery bucket over his head fills with water. When others are rude to him, the water begins to spill out, one drop at a time. Felix quickly notices that everyone has an imaginary bucket. As he helps others fill their buckets, his fills up, too.

The book is an adaptation of an adult best seller, "How Full Is Your Bucket?" The children's version has colorful illustrations, as well as a child-centric story line to which any youngster can relate.

Book: "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids"

Cost: $11.53 on Amazon ; $13.56 on Barnes & Noble

Age: Barnes & Noble says the book is suitable for kids aged three to eight. I've got a three-year-old, and he really likes it.
