Chipotle Mexican Grille, Inc., based in Denver, has reached a deal with Houston based Standard Renewable Energy to provide solar panels on 75 stores. The locations were chosen based on the restaurant's electricity consumption, local utility rebates for solar power and access to direct sunlight.
"Today, we're following a similar path in the way we design and build restaurants, looking for more environmentally friendly building materials and systems that make our restaurants more efficient," Chipotle Chairman and Co-CEO Steve Ells said in a statement.
By installing solar panels to contribute to the store's electrical service, the chain is seeking to reduce its restaurants' energy consumption during peak hours during the afternoon and early evening hours.
