Boston brunch: massive side of bacon at Geoffrey's Cafe
Every so often a brunch spot comes along that offers the holy trinity: homemade corned beef hash, deep fried muffins, and a side of bacon the size of an entree.
Geoffrey's Cafe is such a place.
Located in the heart of Roslindale, Geoffrey's may be a bit of a hike for diners used to brunching downtown or in the South End, but locals know the Sunday Disco Brunch is worth the sometimes daunting wait. Beyond the impressive list of morning cocktails, beyond all the home-made baked goods (yes, even the famous
DonutMuffin), what's the hidden gem? The side of bacon.
There are two possible reactions when one diner says, “I'm contemplating getting a side of hash, a side of bacon, and a side of breakfast potatoes.” One is, “Honey, I love you, and I want to see you live to thirty.” The other is, “That's funny—I was thinking of ordering the exact same thing.” And thus one Sunday the back corner booth found itself with two orders of bacon, two orders of hash, and one order of potatoes. (The lone compromise made in the sake of reason.)
When the plates arrived, the verdict was unanimous: that's not a side of bacon. That's a center.
Truly, $2.95 will get any bacon enthusiast more of the tastiest parts of the pig than any one person should realistically eat in a sitting. Geoffrey's delivers in massive portions on many of the menu items—omelets have been known to tower over small children—but anyone can make a big burger.
Not everyone can make a side of bacon so large (and so divinely crispy) that even diehard bacon lovers ask for a to-go box.
