During the evening hours of last night,
1Up revealed a rumor that Microsoft would be releasing a new Xbox during the fall of 2010. The system would be a slight upgrade over the Xbox 360 and would feature Natal. Aside from 1Up, other sites are now reporting this to be true and now some rumored specs are being reported
According to
FGNOnline, the GPU will receive a slight upgrade. Currently, the Xbox 360 uses Shader Model 3 technology; the new Xbox will have Shader Model 5 technology and 32MD of eDRAM for 1080p output. The GPU will be designed by AMD and has a clock rate of 600Mhz.
The CPU, developed by IBM, will have 6 cores instead of 3 as found in the Xbox 360. Each core will have the same processing power. The main system RAM has been upgraded from 512MB to 1024MB. The system shall keep a Unified Memory Architecture.
Interestingly, if true, the system will still keep standard DVD as a media property. This will ensure backwards and forward compatibility and keep the cost of the machine down. The system will also have built-in WiFi.
The system will see release in Quarter 4 2010 with a simultaneous worldwide release. Microsoft is targeting a sub-$300 price.
I think it's too early to be seeing such numbers and specs released about the next Xbox, however, with all the leaks the industry has seen in recent weeks, I'm willing to take a slim chance on these numbers. If these numbers are true, it sounds like the Xbox 360 will be getting an upgrade similar to the DS-DSI situation, or Gamecube to Wii. The only thing known for certain, is that Project Natal won't release until fall 2010.
