I've been driving north and south on Interstate 5 since it's asphalt was laid down in the 1960's. It runs the length of California from the Oregon border to San Diego. I can assure you that good eats are not plentiful on that route! Forget the green glop at Split Pea Anderson's mid-way between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tourists go there but it gives me a stomach ache.
I've also had my run on hot rueben sandwiches and free olives at Granzella's in Williams north of Sacto. Then there is the Red Boy Pizza in Willows but I only go there for the free wifi though their all-u-can-eat $6
salad bar, pizza, and a drink is cheap and decent.
Imagine my surprise when for the zillionth time on my way north I take a walk in 110 degree heat (sometimes ya just gotta get out of the car) on the back streets of abandoned Williams and find a line of people outside La Fortuna Bakery waiting for their burritos, chili rellenos, and tacos.
Not only was my carne asada burrito with extra gaucamole delicious, but while savoring the juicy, spicy meat filling, I sat at a tiled table in the shade and watched two guys in wifebeaters (sleeveless
Tshirts) on ladders painting an absolutely technicolor urban mural on the entire side of an aging brick building a 1/2 block long.
Shawn Burnes and his painting partner, Maxwell McMaster, are muralists from LA who freelance all over the world. A few days before they had been working in Bogota, Colombia. Good eats and art. Not a bad pit stop in Williams!
Details, details . . .
La Fortuna Bakery is truly a hole-in-the-wall but one worth finding. It is located at 669 F St., Williams. Telephone: 530-473-2023. They are open seven days a week from 5 am - 9 pm.
