I wrote an article a couple of days ago about the purposeful crashing of the lunar orbiter into the moon, so that scientists could observe the debris. I asked if those scientists had respected the moon and communicated with her before doing this.

I must say, I was surprised at the intensity and character of the comments that were left at that article. I felt like I was being stoned at the hands of a mob. I suppose that I can be grateful that it was a mob on the internet this time, rather than encountering them in my physical body!

I did enjoy one comment from someone who called me a lunatic. It was a clever use of words. The connotation of words is symbolic of how we hold ideas. The very negative nature of the word shows the contempt that we as a culture hold for the moon. People who are especially tuned in to the moon are called lunatics! Yes, I'm a lunatic, and I enjoy being one.

In the article, I neglected to mention one crucial bit of information. It is such a part of my attitudes toward living that I forgot that most people don't think that way. In traditional and indigenous societies, such as the Native Americans, all things are considered to have a spirit -- the animals, the trees, and even the rocks. Many of the comments said things like "the moon is just a rock, it can't feel". These comments illustrate the very separation from nature that I was talking about. Could it be that part of the malaise that we have in this world today is a result of this attitude of separation? If we as a collective understood that we are not separate then perhaps we would have an earth that is healthy and functioning, rather than one that is breaking down under the strain of human impact.

Many people asked how to ask a question of the moon. It is an intuitive process, requiring a quieting of the usual mind chatter. Focusing upon the breath is the simplest way to do that. Once the mind is quieted, you simply connect with the moon and ask the question. You might be surprised at what answers you get when you do a process like this! Often they are ones that you don’t even expect.

Others spoke of how the size of the crater formed is so small that it wouldn't make a difference. I can see how they could believe that. But perhaps it is the intention that is important. The act of crashing the orbiter may not make a difference on the gross level. But assuming that the moon is inanimate and ours to be dominated might make a difference in the subtle realms.

I am not against accumulating knowledge. Perhaps the information gathered will be useful and important. I am merely pointing out that a respect for all things would create a very different energy on this earth, and it is possible to accumulate knowledge with respect.

It may be that some people did not notice that I am an astrologer, not an astronomer. Astrology is an intuitive art, an attempt to use the patterns of the planets and the archetypal energies that they embody to explain the mysteries of life itself. It may not make sense on a purely rational level, but it explains more than anything else I have found. Life is not just cut and dried facts, and there is much that science cannot explain. There is much that astrology cannot explain either. Perhaps we could just accept that no one approach has all the answers, and that there is richness in diverse viewpoints.
