Master illustrator Jerry Pinkney grew up struggling with reading way before dyslexia became a household term.  Until he discovered that while reading a highly detailed scene emerged in his mind, he had trouble focusing long enough to be able to read.

Eventually, though reading came slow to him, he learned to bring out the intricate imagery within his mind by drawing and painting colorful and vibrant tales.

We now know that some people, like Jerry Pinkney, can be geniuses just in a different type of intelligence, and probably have a condition that makes it difficult to concentrate for periods of time on certain types of learning, such as reading. Despite these learning differences, he actually graduated with honors, but had to put in much more effort due to his learning challenges.

Interestingly enough, having to force himself to pay attention to his reading, he developed an outstanding sense of bringing the story to life within his mind  -let's call it imagination.  This forced concentration on reading also led him to depict in illustrations the situations expressed with words.  His illustrations are so vivid, words are scarcely necessary to tell the story.  The tales are narrated by the illustrations themselves.

His career spans since 1964, and so does his long list of awards and accolades.  He has illustrated novels and over a hundred titles of children's books in eleven languages, published in 14 countries. In addition, he has illustrations have been commissioned by the US Postal Service, the National Geographic, the National Park Service, the NASA Art Collection at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, and even by the White House for a Christmas program.  His pieces have been published by The New York Times, Arts Section, American Artists Magazine, and The Horn Book Magazine. His exhibits have been included in over a hundred group exhibitions in US, Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Jamaica, and Russia.

The Orlando Museum of Art is currently presenting an exhibition of Master Illustrator, Jerry Pinkney, until November 1st, called Aesops' Fables and Other Tails.
