Rep. Sally Kern (R-OK)

Oklahoma Representative Sally Kern, a 62-year-old Republican from the 84th district, has written a proclamation blaming America’s current economic problems on “abortion, pornography, same sex marriage, sex trafficking, divorce, illegitimate births, child abuse, and many other forms of debauchery.” The proclamation purports to theorize about the state of our economy, but never once mentions greed or irresponsible borrowing and lending. Among the other debauchers Kern cites is the President himself who Kern claims “disregards the biblical admonitions to live clean and pure lives by proclaiming an entire month to an immoral behavior.” By "immoral," she means gay.

Many critics are outraged by her now infamous anti-gay speeches. Kern’s first brush with the national spotlight came in March of 2008 when, in a speech to a Republican organization, she compared gays to terrorists, saying they were “destroying this nation.” Her anti-gay speech not only received national attention and sparked controversy, but also prompted death threats that were investigated by the OSBI.  The first speech was recorded by a cell phone and posted on the internet without her knowledge or consent. But this time she has published her beliefs, which some have called tyrannical, openly.

Kern’s document, entitled “Oklahoma Citizens Proclamation for Morality”, includes quotes from founding fathers and other historical figures, which are intended to support her claim that America is Christian nation gone astray. Calling for elected official and citizens alike to put the Christian Bible before secular democracy, she writes,

“NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we the undersigned elected officials of the people of Oklahoma, religious leaders and citizens of the State of Oklahoma, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world, solemnly declare that the HOPE of the great State of Oklahoma and of these United States, rests upon the Principles of Religion and Morality as put forth in the HOLY BIBLE.”

Kern plans to hold a public signing at the Oklahoma State Capitol tomorrow, July 2, where her supporters, religious leaders, regular citizens and other like-minded politicians are expected to attend and sign the proclamation. Kern's blatant convergence of church and state, as well as her hate-inspired rhetoric, has prompted the ACLU to investigate whether or not public funds are being used for the signing.  Socially progressive organizations like the Human Rights Campaign and The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which seeks to educate voters and help elect progressive, pro-gay candidates to public office, have long been outspoken critics of Kern.  Last March, openly-gay comedian Ellen Degeneres called Kern’s office live on T.V., but was unable to leave her a message because the voice mailbox, not surprisingly, was already full.

Yet in spite of all the controversy, death threats, and lampooning, Kern continues to carry her torch of close-mindedness.  However, this time, her torch is burning more people than ever before. Her social and political positions are not only a slap in the face to gay individuals, but now she also condemns every one of the millions of women who has had an abortion. And everyone who ever gets divorced. Every couple who has a child (and the child) born outside of an official marriage contract; and considering “illegitimate” births make up nearly 40% of births nowadays, the number of unknowing Kern enemies grows by the second.  But possibly the most offensive part of this new proclamation, is that she doesn’t just disagree with millions of Americans, she arrogantly equates those of us who mind our own business, love our country, and love one another with child abusers and sex traffickers.

No woman is an island, so the saying (kind of) goes.  But by the time Kern is finished, her self-made list of personal opponents and enemies of the United States may very well include everyone but her.
