Earlier today, the 2009 New York City marathon concluded. A huge milestone in American distance running was overcome in which American Meb Keflezighi won the male’s division with a time of 2:09:15.

Keflezighi becomes the first U.S. man to win the New York City Marathon since Alberto Salazar did in 1982. Keflezighi was born in the war stricken East African nation of Eritrea, moved to the United States when he was about 12 years old with his family and became a US citizen in 1998.

Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya placed second with a time of 2:09:56. Also, worth noting was forth place finish of American Ryan Hall with time of 2:10:36.

For the women, Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia won in 2:28:52.
