San Francisco State University Museum Studies Program invites you and your family to their new exhibition at the Museum of Ancient Civilizations. "The Lost Cities of North Africa" takes you on tour through ancient Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco.
Dominated by the powerful Roman Empire since 146 BC, North Africa became the world's largest agricultural producer, as well as a huge artisan center, famous for its exquisite oil lamps and beautiful mosaics. The exhibition features Roman pottery from Tunisia, and ceramic Roman lamps on loan from the California Academy of Sciences. Black-and-white photographs from the 1930s help visitors visualize the area that changed so much later in 20th century. Selected objects from their Sutro Egyptian Collection will be displayed, including the mummies.
Free group tours and field trips for grades three through eight are available. Advance registration is required. To arrange a field trip or tour, please call (415) 405-0599 at least two weeks in advance. All field trips include an exploration of the gallery and a hands-on activity preparing a dummy mummy for the afterlife!
SF State University Museum will also host a Halloween Family Day on Friday, October 30, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Come in costume or come as you are. Cider, snacks, storytelling, and a ghoulish hands-on activity will be available.
Best of all, admission to the museum is free. Check their website for more information.
The Museum of Ancient Civilizations is located in room 510 of the Humanities Building on Tapia Drive, cross-street Font Boulevard, on the San Francisco State University campus.
