Saving Money on Pet Spending Can Go a Long Way
Are you worried about how you can afford to keep your family dog in this current state of economic distress? Don't fret there are many simple and easy things you can do to help keep the cost down on your pet spending. Take one or all thirteen and apply them to your lives according to your lifestyle.

1. Adopt from a shelter. Purebreds are expensive.

2. Be sure to spay/neuter your dog. If your dog gets pregnant the more mouths to feed means more money coming out of your pocket.

3. Shop around for a vet. Research which vets have great quality service as well as reasonable pricing. This could save you hundreds of dollars in vet fees and services.

4. Keep your dog on a set eating schedule. Don't let your dog eat too much because this could make them obese, and you are spending more money on dog food. Be sure to talk with your veterinarian to choose the best dog food for your dog.

5. Make homemade dog toys and treats. Sometimes dogs are picky, and the toy they like the most is one laying around the house. An old sock, ball, rope, bottle, etc. You can even take these materials, put them together, and make a new toy! Be creative and have fun with it. A simple ball and stick will sometimes be good enough for them.

6. Think before you spend. Think about what you are buying before you buy it. Don't just give in to the latest fads. Fads could include everything from accessories, unnecessary vet procedures, and really expensive dog toys.

7. Make your home pet proof. Reduced accidents can reduce vet visits and unnecessary fees. Make sure all household cleaning products are safe for pets. During the winter and summer months make sure all outside products (salt, lawn care products) are safe for your pet as well. We all love to decorate for the holidays, but some of the items we decorate with are harmful for pets. Decorate responsibly. For more information about pets on holidays go here.

8. Keep your dog healthy. Make sure you are using preventive techniques against fleas, ticks, and heartworms. Also be sure your dog is up to date on all their immunizations. The healthier your dog, the chances are less likely for a vet visit.

9. Groom at home. Learn how to clip your dogs nails and brush their teeth. These can be expensive procedures that add up over time. You can even save money by brushing them regularly and giving them bathes yourself.

10. Train your dog at home. There are many books and videos that are available to help train your dog. Or look online! There are plenty resources available to help.

11. Buy used. Your dog probably doesn't care if their kennel is new or used. Just make sure when you buy used there is not a lingering odor if there is don't buy it. Disinfect and thoroughly wash before use.

12. Clip coupons. Or be adventurous and print them off the Internet. You could even sign up for Petsmart and Petco email advertisements and discount cards. Then you can get great discounts throughout the store and collect points to use.

13. Have an emergency dog fund. Dogs are curious creatures who sometimes bit off more than they can chew. Accidents happen and we all need to be prepared. If your budget allows for it have money in an emergency pet fund just in case anything happens. It's always to be prepared than sorry.
