U2’s world tour, “U2 360”, has finally taken flight. Over 90,000 fans were in attendance at the band’s opening night extravaganza in Spain last night. And judging from this photo, it looks an amazing time was had by all.
The band opened up the show with the arena-rock song “Breathe” from their latest record, “No Line on the Horizon”. The song was then followed by three more songs from the album, including back-to-back singles “Get on Your Boots” and “Magnificent”.
Their hit “Beautiful Day” followed after the new material was performed. Songs from their 2004 album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” that were performed were “City of Blinding Lights” and “Vertigo”. Classics such as “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” also made appearances on the setlist.
The band also dusted off some old favorites, including “MLK”, “The Unforgettable Fire”, and “Angel of Harlem”. U2’s encore set consisted of “Ultraviolet”, “With or Without You”, and “Moment of Surrender”. For the complete setlist, visit the band’s website.
As per U2.com, U2 played for almost two and a half hours and unveiled their incredible stage that has been widely discussed since the tour was first announced. Bono talked about the rehearsal process in Spain, saying, “This has been our neighborhood for the last couple of weeks. This is where we wanted to build our space station…”
The band definitely took the space-age theme to heart as live screens connected the band to another “space station” and Bono thus asked the astronaut, “Commander, can you see Barcelona?”
The astronaut replied, “Right now the most beautiful sight in our cosmos is the blue planet earth.”
U2 plays Barcelona again tomorrow night, July 2nd.
Was anyone there? How was it? What did you think of the setlist?
