U2 had Berliners on their feet in the freezing cold for the MTV Europe Music Awards on Thursday night for a set that while small, packed a lot of emotion as the anniversary of the crumbling of the Berlin Wall was recognized.
The band opened with “One”, and then proceeded into “Magnificent”. Surprise guest, and “Mayor of New York City” (Bono’s words) Jay-Z threw some rap into “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. “Beautiful Day”, “Vertigo”, and “Moment of Surrender” finished off the performance.
The Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, said of U2’s set, “Congratulations to U2 and MTV for bringing this unique moment of musical history to the City of Berlin.”
As per U2.com, U2 actually ended up winning an award at the show, “Best Live Act”! Larry and Adam accepted the prize for the band. Now that’s an award show speech I would like to have seen!
While on the subject of performances, tickets for many of the North American cities on the 2010 leg of “360” will be going on sale Monday. Check your ticket provider for times and prices. The fan club presale has ended.
The cities that are on the horizon for the on sale are Anaheim, Chicago, Miami, and New York/East Rutherford. Fan club/public onsales for Seattle, East Lansing, Philadelphia, and Montreal are still being worked out so keep an eye out. Also, since a public onsale is Monday, hopefully U2 will announce more cities to this leg. I’m still holding out for another Vegas show, and if there is a SLIM and TINY chance that anyone from U2’s crew is reading this, a friend of mine would like to see a Minneapolis date, so try and squeeze that in if you can!
As I said before when these new dates were announced, I was planning on attending the July 19th show in New York/East Rutherford. Well, I got my tickets during the fan club presale! And not only did I get my tickets, but I finally (after waiting so long since I first saw them live) got a spot in the GA pit! Words can’t even begin to describe the excitement I felt when I got them. The show is five days before my 25th birthday and I can’t imagine a more fitting way to celebrate that milestone than with my favorite band and surrounded by my fellow awesome U2 fans. So if anyone is going to that show I will see you there!
Here is the actually quite fantastic Jay-Z-infused “Sunday Bloody Sunday” from Berlin via BlankaMTV’s video.
