Sleep deprivation can severely alter behavior. Lack of sleep can become fatal. In a study of rats that were not allowed to sleep, it took only three weeks for them all to die. During periods of “quiet rest” the muscles of the body can rejuvenate, however, without sleep the brain is unable to rejuvenate.
There are four basic types of sleep deprivation; Insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome (RLS), and narcolepsy. Some individuals are left sleep deprived from prolonged periods of awakeness associated to today’s demands.
Insomnia symptoms are difficulty falling asleep, waking up in the middle of the night for no particular reason, waking up too early without being able to fall asleep again, and feeling tired and that your sleep was not refreshing.
Sleep apnea is an interruption of even respirations during rest, and is often characterized by snoring, and chronic fatigue.
Restless Legs syndrome (RLS) is an increasing itch, tingle, or ache of the legs at night. And Narcolepsy is a disorder where patients experience uncontrollable falling asleep during the day.
Sleep deprivation can have devastating effects on health. It impairs the ability to think, handle stress, make decisions, and maintain a healthy immune system. Sleep deprivation can even cause hallucinations.
Other typical effects of sleep deprivation include; depression, heart disease, hypertension, irritability, slower reaction times, slurred speech, and tremors. Sleep deprived individuals should avoid driving and operating large machinery.
