On Sunday, Brazilian police detained Arturo Gatti’s wife after the former boxer was found dead and bloodied in a hotel room at a seaside resort.
Amanda Rodrigues, 23, was taken into custody after interrogators found inconsistencies in her statements to police.
Gatti, 37, also known as “Thunder,” was apparently strangled with a purse strap, found blood stained at the scene. According to The Washington Post, Gatti also had a head injury.
Rodrigues denies any involvement in her husband’s death, but was unable to explain how she spent 10 hours in the hotel room without noticing her husband was dead.
Milena Saraiva, a spokesperson for the Pernambuco state civil police said authorities are investigating witness reports that the couple fought and Gatti was drunk by the time they returned to their room on Friday night.
Saraiva also said that Rodrigues and Gatti were jealous of one another and he incessantly complained about the clothes she wore when she traveled to Brazil.
The Gatti's had apparently traveled to Brazil with their 10-month-old son for a second honeymoon.
Their son was unharmed and is being cared for by Rodrigues’ sister.
Brazilian boxer, Acelino “Popo” Freitas told local media he was a close friend of Gatti and his wife and “knew they were having some sort of problem and were about to separate," but said he didn’t know they were in Brazil.
Gatti retired from boxing in 2007 with a career record of 40-9 and 31 knockouts.
