I went to my mailbox, and here’s what I found: a message to me, its contents profound (edited, with reporter's musings in italics).
“Dear Tammy,
I've embarked on an exciting journey, of epic proportions. I’m part of an arts and charity minded group supporting “Flutter Tunnel,” and our mission is two-pronged:
• Quickly create an environmentally and socially responsible sculpture.
• Work to provide solar powered flashlights for Ugandan children so that their educational opportunities will be enhanced.”
Why do I think this is going to tie into Burning Man?
“Our group received a grant to cover the costs of creating a sculpture for the annual Burning Man Festival held each September in Nevada. We are currently raising funds to purchase two hundred “SunNight Solar” flashlights that will illuminate our sculpture at night, for a week.”
What does this have to do with Ugandan children?
“Those lights get donated to “Into Your Hands,” a rural Ugandan non-profit working to empower children and families in their efforts to ease poverty and disease.”
How on earth?
“Mark Bent, SunNight Solar’s founder, says that even though we think of these as toys or flashlights, in Africa buying kerosene can use up 30% of your income. Needing less kerosene is a very big deal. SunNight Solar collaborates with non-profit organizations throughout the developing world. These lights have the power to:
• Allow children to study at night, currently very difficult.
• Create safer environments for women and children, particularly at night.
• Safely replace kerosene and wood-powered light by reducing respiratory diseases caused by fumes and smoke, and reducing greenhouse gases.”
Brilliant. So to speak. How much do you need?
“Our fundraising goal is $4,000 (200 lights @ $20). One of our project members will take these flashlights to Uganda en route to Rwanda, eliminating costly international shipping. We ask people to consider donating $10 to $50, or make a substantial sponsorship donation of $500 to $1,000. Flutter Tunnel is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. To donate online and learn more about Flutter Tunnel, visit www.fluttertunnel.com.
