It was announced this week that actor Pierce Brosnan, perhaps best known for his role in the book-to-film franchise, James Bond, will play actor/musician Robert Pattinson's dad in an upcoming film, tentatively titled, Remember Me. Audiences probably know Robert Pattinson best thus far as the vampire, Edward Cullen, from the Twilight saga films based on the bestselling series by Stephenie Meyer. Will audiences find Brosnan believable as Pattinson's father?
Age?
Perhaps the first factor to consider is age (though the elder actor may wish it weren't so). Mr. Brosnan's birthday is three days after Pattinson's, but 33 years earlier. Brosnan was born May 16, 1953 whereas Robert Pattinson was born on May 13, 1986. Brosnan recently played Sam Carmichael, a man capable of being actor Amanda Seyfried's father in Mamma Mia! Ms. Seyfried was born in 1985, one year before Pattinson. The age criterion certainly fits.
Appearance / Charisma?
Secondly, audiences will surely take the appearance and charisma of the two actors into account. Mr. Brosnan is tall--over 6 feet 1 inch. Mr. Pattinson is also tall, at almost exactly the same height. Both men are of slender build.
Though their facial features and coloring are quite different, both men hail from the same part of the world. Brosnan was born in Ireland but moved to the UK at an early age. Mr. Pattinson was born and raised in London.
Both actors have played leading men where their roles required that they be charismatic and highly attractive to women.

Pierce Brosnan played the infamous character, James Bond, based on the novels by Ian Fleming. He played Bond in Golden Eye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002). Bond is noted for his money, style, and suave ability to charm the ladies at the same time he is involved in high action dramas tracking down the world's deadliest threats.
Robert Pattinson's Edward Cullen character in the Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon films has charm that becomes a vampire in Stephenie Meyer's fantasy world. While he is capable of drawing in almost any female he desires as a result of being a vampire, Edward only has eyes for 'normal' girl, Bella Swan. Edward is also well-to-do and cultured, enjoying classical music and literature. Like Bond, he can go fast when he wants to, but unlike James Bond, Edward Cullen does not necessarily need a fast car in which to do so.
Of course, despite the casting, good or bad, whether the father-son relationship really works in Remember Me is most dependent on the performances of the two actors themselves as well as the way their lines are written by Will Fetters and Jenny Lumet. While Pattinson's fans may see him moving more in the direction of Johnny Depp or Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of future roles than in the direction of Pierce Brosnan's career, Mr. Brosnan's years of experience will give the younger actor a good chance to further refine his acting skills watching another leading man at work.
Pattinson will have another opportunity to learn from another experienced actor-"dad" when he plays the son of Australian, Hugh Jackman, in Unbound Captives later in 2009.
