Denis Menchov assumes Tour of Italy lead with epic time trial win; Levi Leipheimer third overall

Russia's Denis Menchov (Rabobank) won the long-anticipated and long 12th stage and moved into the Tour of Italy overall race lead.

Menchov, who claimed his second stage of the event, covered the 60.6-kilometer unduating course in 1 hour, 13 minutes and 53 seconds. He now holds a 34-second cushion over previous race leader Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes) of Italy, who finished the stage in 6th place, 1:54 behind Menchov.

Levi Leipheimer (Astana) of Santa Rosa, Calif., (Astana) finished second in the stage in 1:14:27. Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone - Caffe Mokambo), was third in 1:35:32. Leipheimer moved into third place overall, 40 seconds behind Menchov.

Lance Armstrong placed 12th in the stage and is also 12th overall, trailing by 6:34.
