The route for the 2009 Tour of Italy will be announced Dec. 13 in a lavish press conference that will highlight the event’s centennial and feature further anticipation of what’s developing as one of the race’s most competitive editions.
Like happens prior to every Grand Tour announcement, “leaks” of various stages routes have been touted by various city politicians and chamber of commerce representatives throughout Italy.
And it’s no different this year, with word coming today that the ’09 Giro Italia will feature a particularly long individual time trial.
Correspondingly, the list of top entrants in the Giro d’Italia (it will be held May 9-29) keeps growing with the race still five months away.
Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) of Australia is the latest cyclist to join the top echelon of 2009 Tour of Italy riders.
According to the web site, tuttobiciweb.com, Evans, runnerup in the 2008 Tour de France, will join a Tour of Italy field also expected to include: reigning Tour de France titlist Carlos Sastre (Cervelo Test Team) of Spain; Ivan Basso (Liquigas) of Italy, the 2006 Tour of Italy winner; Lance Armstrong (Astana), making his Tour of Italy debut; and Damiano Cunego (Lampre) of Italy, who won the Tour of Italy in 2004.
"I think I am sufficiently mature to take on two big races like the Giro and Tour in the same year,” Evans told the web site. “I wore the leader's jersey for one day (in 2002) and it always remained in my heart.”
Evans raced the Tour de France and Vuelta a España this year, the first time he faced two three-week races in one year.
