It's not surprising that the holiday season wreaks havoc on the environment. Did you know that Americans throw away 25% more waste during the holidays than the rest of the year? Think about the wrapping paper you buy, use, and toss; think about the packaging from the gifts you buy; and think about the carbon emissions from having gifts and packages shipped as well as when you get in the car to hit the mall. Mother Earth takes a beating during the holidays! Now you have a way to give our planet a break, and it can change the way you look at the season.

King County is launching its 13th annual Waste Free Holidays program that will run from November 15 through December 31. During this time,  over 150 local participating businesses and organizations will offer discounts between 15-50% on museums, restaurant meals, massages, and a lot more! This gives you an opportunity to offer loved ones experiences that will create lasting memories, instead of toys or gadgets they'll toss in a year or so.

Here are a few of the discounts offered on the Eastside that your family, or the other families in your life, might enjoy. Check out the Waste Free Holidays website for complete details about these and other discounts.

Geology Adventures
Did you know that tucked away in Preston (just past Issaquah) there lies a nifty little place that will rock your world? Geology Adventures will let your kiddo, who probably loves to collect just about anything, find minerals, crystals, and rocks on amazing family day trips. For Waste Free Holidays, Geology Adventures is offering $5 off a family-friendly day trip in Spring/Summer 2009 to collect amber that is 40 million years old!

KidsQuest Children's Museum
If you live on the Eastside and have kids but for some reason don't know about KidsQuest Children's Museum, here's your chance! Located in Bellevue and loved by local families, KidsQuest is a place that will get your child thinking, creating, and learning. There's a place for younger kids to play and explore safely, and of course there's Waterways, which allows kids to play with water in every way imaginable short of swimming! KidsQuest is offering a 15% discount on Family Fun memberships. Just stop by, mention Waste Free Holidays, and sign up with the discount!

Northwest Railway Museum
What kid doesn't love a train ride? A visit to the Northwest Railway Museum in Snoqualmie followed by a scenic train ride is a great way to spend time as a family. The museum will show your kids how people used to travel, and how the railway changed our state. The train ride winds through trees and past Snoqualmie Falls, showing you just how beautiful this area truly is. The Northwest Railway Museum is offering a 15-20% discount on train rides.

WJT Horseback Riding Lessons
You can't always buy your child that pony she begs for, but you can give her riding lessons! Whistle Jacket Training is run out of Iron Gate Stables in Sammamish. Here you can give the equestrian lover in your life a taste of what horseback riding is like (trust me, it ain't easy but it's fun!). WJT is offering 25% off new student lessons with a minimum of two lessons purchased.

Bellevue Arts Museum
Downtown Bellevue is really shaping up, offering plenty of activities and places to go. One of its shining stars is the Bellevue Arts Museum. You might think that having kids in an art museum is a lot like a bull in a china shop, but you'd be amazed at how much kids love seeing an array of colorful art and sculptures. On a rainy day it's a lot of fun strolling through the museum with your kids. The Bellevue Arts Museum is offering 20% off individual and family memberships.
