Cool off with the Daniel Craig popsicle

With the Seattle-area officially in a dry spell (perhaps even breaking records), it got me to thinking about ways to stay cool.  In my house, I freeze store-bought yogurt in those plastic popsicle molds and make yogurt pops that my daughter loves.  I even get the yogurt with extra fiber for an extra punch (you can add a mix-in fiber like BeneFiber to any yogurt you happen to like, as well).

If you don't have a plastic popsicle mold, you can also use paper cups with popsicle sticks.  Let the popsicles freeze for an hour or two before inserting the sticks, otherwise they tend to fall over.  Also, when choosing your paper cups, I recommend getting waxed cups.  I have found that unwaxed cups can stick to your popsicle leaving paper on your treat.

If you are interested in some more unique popsicle recipes, here is a round-up of a few that really intrigued me.  And the picture?  That is the most unusual popsicle of all:  a limited edition Del Monte popsicle in the shape of 007 actor Daniel Craig.  Seriously!  I suggest you stick with these more tame popsicles, though!

Electric Green Spinach Popsicles
You want unusual?  Here you go!  How about adding veggies to your popsicles?  This recipe is pretty simple:  blend together bananas, pineapple, spinach, and water, freeze, and voila!  The kids apparently love them, though I would suggest not telling them they have spinach- just call them Electric Green Popsicles!  Recipe right here.

Banana Palentas (Mexican style popsicles)
For some international flair, I suggest trying Palentas, sometimes known as "Mexican popsicles."  These often include milk, which gives it a creamier texture, along with fruit and some other flavorings.  Here is a good article about palentas.  To try palentas at your house, you could start with this recipe for banana palentas made from 2 bananas, whole milk, vanilla, and sugar.

Spicy Cucumber and Cantaloupe Popsicles
This one is another variation of the palenta, with a bit of a kick!  The kids might be a little overwhelmed by the jalapeno in the recipe, but why not try anyway?  They could love the cantaloupe/cucumber/lime combo of the recipe quite a bit!  Check it out here.

Oreo Chocolate Pudding Pops
Now we are getting back to the more traditional.  This one combines milk, chocolate pudding mix, Cool Whip, and Oreos.  It sounds delish!  Here it is.

Root Beer Float Popsicles
This one is beautiful in its simplicity:  root beer plus ice cream, blend, freeze, enjoy.  Read more about it here.

Grape kabopsicles
This is a great healthy treat, and exceedingly easy!  Just freeze fresh grapes on skewer sticks.  I love the texture of frozen grapes and this makes it even more fun.  The folks at Raw Food Crafting even made them look great by alternating red and green grapes.  Check out the photos here.
