Below is a trailer for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum hitting Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Games for Windows. This trailer reveals some interesting tid-bits about the game and how it looks in motion of course. Taking a page from the Dark Knight, this game is dark, not the campy Batman seen in the past or the comic oriented Bats. This is a world of real, violent criminals such as the Joker, Killer Croc and an unnamed gray skinned brute (Bane?). The trailer begins with Batman unloading the Joker into Arkham which is a very dank, dark and ancient place. As the Joker breaks free and unleashes a brutal elbow, viewers see a not-too-happy Bats punch a window as he observes but cannot interfere. Guess this was part of the unloading process, but the basis of the story seems to be set here. The Joker breaks free and other inmates will follow as the asylum will serve as the base of the game. So for baddies we see Joker at the 24 seconds mark, the spikey, grey skinned brute I mentioned (seems to be in a lab or medic area), another unnamed inmate in a face mask al-la Hannibal and finally Croc at the 34 second mark. His presence is large and in charge … The masked inmate could have been him in a smaller state also. More baddies will follow, just check out the 28 second mark as Bats overlooks Arkham and in the distance there is a garden area (top left) and a water area, bottom middle. These are just two of the items viewable in what looks to be a very Castlevania-ish size asylum.

Graphics wise this trailer does not do justice to the original file where each texture, suit, glove, wall, brick … it all looks very polished and real. Croc’s area is so realistic looking viewers can almost imagine the small of the dank, still water. Not much in the way of game play is shown, but a few glimpses offer what should be a third-person title, although more research is needed to confirm. For now what we’ve got it one solid looking trailer that shows off what the web and print publications have shown to date. Is Batman about to discover the secret to good video gaming for the DC Universe the way Spider-Man did for Marvel? Time will tell but the future looks very bright even as the game looks this dark.
