You got your MK in my DC. No, you got your DC in my MK. In a few weeks gamers will see if this unexpected gaming concoction will taste ad creamy and delicious as a peanut butter and chocolate treat but for now they can only speculate. Mortal Kombat has reinvented itself in recent years with a move to 3D, but it’s still lagging behind Tekken, Virtua Fighter and Dead or Alive. Taking a page from Soulcaliburs use of guest characters, Mortal Kombat has teamed up with DC’s mightiest heroes and villains to create a fighting game crossover perfect for the printed page and looking mighty fine in its pixilated glory.

Judging from the two trailers below game play is reminiscent of MK Armageddon, solid if not spectacular, mixing in DC’s characters with a back-story to justify their inclusion. The story is as comic as can be with two worlds slowly combining as they occupy the same space and time, only one can survive and of course you need to fight to figure out which. Cheesy, yes, but it will get the job done especially when you faceoff as Batman against Scorpion or Superman against Raiden. These characters are iconic and while their meeting raised eyebrows it’s not the first time someone got their chocolate in another’s peanut butter.

MK vs. DC’s fate is yet to be determined so let’s take a look at some other odd combos to get an idea of where gamers and fans of MK and DC may be headed.

Kingdom Hearts – A true gem. An action RPG that utilized classic, and new, Square Enix characters and Disney characters and weaved a story, soundtrack and experience not soon to be forgotten and that will live in gamer’s hearts for many years. Cloud and Goofy … who knew.

XO and Iron Man – Bad, bad game, but not a bad concept. Comics long have done crossover one-shots, but this gaming meeting of two armored heroes just fell flat. Where was the comic tie-in?

Marvel Nemesis – EA creates some imperfect character and teams up with Marvel in a unique story fighting game. The best part of this was Jae Lee’s art. More a mashup of publisher EA and Marvel’s well known characters. Can anyone name one of the Imperfects?

Marvel vs. Capcom – Fighting games seem to be the easiest way to tie two series together. Mix A with B, add in story and voila, but these titles, classic 2D fighters, utilized well and lesser known characters along with outstanding animation to create a great fighting game series.

Mario and Sonic at Olympics – Mario and Sonic in the same game, wow, but the Olympics, interesting. Lots of Wii motion in this title (and DS too) and truthfully after a while gamers forget which characters they are using as the events drive this title. With all of the Mario sports titles how long until Sonic and others start to show up even more.

LEGO and anyone – Star Wars, Indian Jones and now Batman. Simple, fun, cookie-cutter game play that works so well (Star Wars, Batman) and ok (Indie) that there are just bound to be more. The frosting on the top has to be the signature humor.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam – As long as one year passes into another there will be more Dynasty Warriors, but Gundam, hmmm the niche get nichier. Fighting through fields and fields of warriors is fun, but doing it in a giant Gundam where every universe is mixed and get a franchise only a true fan can love.

Smash Bros. Brawl – Technically not a mashup, this was an odd angle for Nintendo to take with characters like Samus, Mario and Pikachu. Solid Snake has joined the most recent Wii title adding to the sports title theory above.

These are just the titles that pop to mind so chime in with other gaming combos that worked or sputtered out and which combos could work in the future as Mortal Kombat and DC are looking to do now.
